As a beginner, finding the perfect DSLR camera can be a challenging task, especially if you're on a tight budget. The world of photography is diverse and flexible, and so are your options when it comes to finding a professional DSLR. Spending hours on research may not be the ideal way to spend your time; Therefore, I’ve done the work for you.
Below is a complete DSLR buying guide categorised by price to help you find the best option for your budget.
Before investing your time and energy in finding a professional DSLR camera, you need to be aware of essential factors to consider when buying a DSLR camera.
The first factor to question your position - are you an early professional who has little money to spend on a camera, or a beginner who's interested in learning everything about the photography industry with zero budget? Once you've got that down, we can begin.
1. My first recomendation is to first seek that DSLR feel from your phone.
The cheapest professional camera you'll find is most likely located in your smartphone. Sure, it's sometimes hard to believe that a camera as simple as the one in a smartphone can do anything impressive. The key to having a professional mobile camera, even if your phone has a half-decent camera, is optimizing your device as best as possible.
Fortunately, you don't need to upgrade or pay for anything physical, since the camera in your phone can have similar capabilities to a DSLR camera.
Of course, a mobile camera won't be perfect by default, but some apps can bring your phone's camera to its performance peak. Such apps will dig into your mobile camera's inner settings, helping you control features that you didn't know existed on your phone.
The Adobe Lightroom app, for example, is a system that is designed to optimize your phone for not only photography, but also photo editing. It's available for both Android and iOS users. Download links below article.
If you are interested in videography rather than photography, an excellent app to look into is Filmic Pro. It's not free, but it's most definitely worthwhile. Like to Adobe Lightroom, Filmic Pro is designed to optimize your phone's camera and provide access to the DLSR like settings, but for video creation and editing. Filmic Pro is available for both Android and iOS users. Download links below article.
2. The Best Budget DSLR Cameras
If you're still not satisfied with the quality of your mobile camera, it's time to begin the search for a proper DSLR camera. Sure, it can be tricky to find a camera that will fit your budget, but the result will be well worth the effort. Then again, you won't need to spend an unimaginably large amount of time on research, since we've gathered all of the information for you.
£200-£300 Budget
If your budget is somewhere between £200 and £300, it can be a bit difficult to find a brand new professional camera. Keep in mind that most DSLR cameras will cost quite a bit. Of course, you probably don't have a large budget, so, for £200-£300, you'll most likely have to get a used DSLR.
Used doesn't mean bad, though. Most used DSLR cameras are in great condition as they are generally viewed as precious tools, there owners tend to look after them. Here are a few cameras to look into with a low budget:
Purchase links below article.
£300 - £500 Budget
With this budget, you'll be able to find some DSLR cameras that are either used or new. Either way, you'll most likely be noticing a spike in performance, since the budget will allow for higher quality. Here are a few cameras I personally recommend to look into:
These options will tend to be incremental upgrades of the cameras in the previous tier with improvements to things like the image quality, the sensor size, focus and better video settings.
£500 - £1000 Budget
At this point, your budget will allow you to find a brand new, professional DSLR camera. The best part is, most £500 - £1000 DSLR cameras have excellent image quality, and they're more than worth the price. Here are some of the most affordable, brand new DSLR cameras you should look into:
The Canon EOS RP and Sony A6500 have significant improvements over the cameras in the previous tier. There will be significant upgrades in the autofocus department for both photos and videos, the will be significantly better in low light conditions producing images with much less noice and general overall better quality. They will also have better video specs like higher frame rates and the ability to shoot 4K. If these things are important to you and you have the budget to accomodate, then this will be the category for you.
£1000 - £1500 Budget
If you have £1000 - £1500 to spend, you'll be able to find a high-quality DSLR camera in no time. Most high end prosumer DSLR cameras sell for this price, and their value is well worth the money. My two main cameras for this budget (and are also viewed as industry standard) are:
These two cameras as widely used in the photography industry. They are viewed as the flagship models from the top camera manufacturers in the industry. You can expect best in class image quality, autofocus, video specs, ease of use, wide variety of lenses and of course, high end build quality. Once your budget is up to par, you need not look any further than these two. Of course the camera you select will depend on how loyal you are to each brand or what you are familiar with. However you will not go wrong selecting either of these two.
I personally use the Canon EOS R as I am currently locked into the Canon echosystem with a collection of Canon lenses and accessories but having sampled the Sony A7iii, I would be comfortable in recommending both.
I hope this article has been useful. In the next blog post, I will select the best all round camera in my opinion and provide a detailed review.
